Experimention towards a Data Set

October 7, 2008

1. First, I tried to flush out the exact process I am going for in the visualization and how it essentially pertains to the concept:

Paradigm:

  • set of EXPERIENCES, BELIEFS and VALUES that affect the way an individual PERCEIVES REALITY and RESPONDS TO that PERCEPTION
  • DOMINANT PARADIGM = values, or SYSTEM OF THOUGHT, in a society that are MOST STANDARD and WIDELY HELD at a given time
  • Dominant paradigms are SHAPED both by the community’s CULTURAL BACKGROUND and by the CONTEXT of the HISTORICAL MOMENT
  • MEDIA COVERAGE, DYNAMIC LEADERS, JOURNALS, EDITORS FACILITATE system of thought, DISSEMINATE information to become an ACCEPTED DOMINANT & LEGITIMATE PARADIGM
  • in cybernetics, conceptually means a way for REDUCING the CHAOTIC MASS to some form of ORDER

2. Using DayLife, a service that simplifies the complex news landscape by gathering and analyzing news from thousands of high-quality news sources from across the web, I queried several phrases that pertain to the idea of Global Entropy and the movement of Massive Change. I used the simple widget tools they provide using their API to try to narrow down the data source and content that I’m going to be working with. I wanted it to be something that allowed me to create a sense of power in how I am filtering the data and what is driving the generative visualization.

3. I realized that the most striking results came from the Quotes sections of the news aggregation, so I hand queried several key paradigms and collected the results to see if there were any interesting patterns. Thus far, the Quotes aggregation has allowed me to identify a balance between the truth to the content and patterns found within the data sources. With a combination of aggregating paradigm words along with salient semantic structures that are associated with them, I may be able to reveal new meanings that read differently when they are merged randomly while maintaining a “stickiness” factor.

4. Here is a working list of paradigms that I see patterns of when querying Energy Crisis, Climate Crisis, & Food Crisis:

* To be green
* green chemistry
* green technology
* greenhouse gases
* carbon trading
* reduce impacts
* reverse effects
* green culture
* increase energy efficiency
* carbon footprint
* global crisis
* consumer market
* offshore drilling
* reduce gas prices
* renewable energy
* growing global
* impact of the global
* green revolution
* going green
* rising price of food
